Spitting and Saliva An average person produces 25,000 quarts of spit in a lifetime. That's enough to fill at least one swimming pool. A baby will drool thirty-eight gallons of spittle in its first year of life. Spit has been used to convict people. A suspected rapist running away spat on the street, thereby accidentally providing a DNA sample. The cop following him picked up the saliva with a tissue, and the DNA was matched to that of semen the rapist left at the scene of the crime. In Tanzania, Africa, the Masai people regard spitting as a show of good will. Newborn babies are spat upon for good luck. Deals are often closed with a spit-soaked handshake. |
